Off to Wembley!

In 1921 Dick joined Bolton Wanderers for the highest transfer fee ever paid for a goalkeeper.

Two years later, Bolton reached the FA Cup Final. It was to be played for the first time at Wembley.

Wembley was being transformed from an open space to the site of the British Empire Exhibition. There would be temples, Arab forts and colonial palaces, a lake, fun-fair and gardens. At the centre of the site was a new national stadium with a running track, football pitch and iconic twin towers.

The Empire Stadium (later renamed Wembley Stadium) was built to hold 125,000 people and promoters were afraid they would never fill it. They need not have worried.
